Exciting New Art Season at
Orion Powerhouse Akaroa Art Gallery

A celebration of creativity and talent

Akaroa Gallery is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated art season, that promises to captivate art enthusiasts and collectors alike. This season features an impressive lineup of local and national artists, showcasing a diverse array of styles and mediums. Here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect.

COLD WHISPERS

Mi Kyung Jang opens the season on the 5th October with her stunning collection of works that reflect the harmony, interconnectedness and beauty of the natural world. Her pieces are renowned for their delicate yet vibrant depictions of landscapes and flora, offering a serene and immersive experience for viewers. Jang’s artistic journey traverses various mediums, encompassing sculpture, painting, and clay.  Mi Kyung Jang’s art is a profound exploration of humanity’s intricate connection with the natural world and the dangers this interaction can result in. Her art thus acts as a conduit for understanding the world and our place within it.

GROUP EXHIBITION

November sees a group exhibition bringing together the unique talents of Peninsula personalities: Steve Helps, Dave Walker, and Frances de Latour. Each artist offers a distinct perspective, creating a rich and varied showcase. Helps is known for his unique ability to capture the myriad moods and hues of Peninsula landscapes, Walker for his pottery prowess, and De Latour for her evocative work.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

The Christmas Exhibition, commencing 30 November, features a collection of works from a talented range of artists, celebrating the festive season. From Lyn Baynes’ whimsical ceramics to Ben Reid’s captivating prints, this exhibition offers a delightful variety of art perfect for holiday gifts and seasonal inspiration. Also featured are Frances Malcolm, Cath Grant, Hugh Wilson and Kim Tocker.

SUNSHINE ROAD

Starting hard on the heels of the Christmas exhibition on Saturday, 28th December, Catherine Manchester’s "Sunshine Road" promises to be a vibrant and uplifting exhibition, showcasing her love for bright, bold colours and dynamic compositions. Her work contains elements of expressionism and abstract, avant garde and classical. Her paintings often having strong gestural qualities. Catherine reflects themes of joy and positivity, making this a perfect exhibition to start the new year.

ANT BENTLY AND JENNIFER MAXWELL

February sees a Dynamic Duo Pairing of Akaroa’s Ant Bentley and Jennifer Maxwell in a joint exhibition that highlights their contrasting mediums and styles. Maxwell’s wildlife sculptures and Bentley’s paintings, often of local Akaroa buildings and townscapes, will again create a stimulating and engaging visual dialogue.

JENNY REEVE AND IAN WALLS

A Pairing of two Canterbury artists Jenny Reeve and Ian Walls begins on Saturday, 22nd February bringing together their talents for an exhibition that blends Walls’ remarkable photographs with Reeve’s riverscapes. Reeve’s uses the cyanotype process to bring to us the current environment of Canterbury’s braided rivers. Walls’ Photographs capture for our delight his favourite themes arising from a love of nature, architecture, France, abstracts and (for the Peninsula farmer) tractors.

ANNETTE MOORE

The final show, spanning the Easter period, sees Annette Moore leading a diverse array of artists, each contributing their unique style and vision.  This exhibition with its rich tapestry of artworks, celebrating collective creativity and community spirit, promises something for everyone.

The forthcoming art season at Akaroa Gallery is set to be an extraordinary celebration of creativity and talent building on the gallery’s 50 years of bringing art to the people of the Peninsula. With such a diverse lineup of exhibitions and events, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
